Fabel: The Dog Who Sniffed Time
How the world's first archaeology dog unearthed ancient human bones and buried treasures using only his nose
Ages 6 to 10
Imagine if you could sniff ancient time—a past from thousands of years ago!
Fabel, the world’s first licensed archaeology dog, did just that. He helped scientists discover long ago buried bones and treasures.
Dogs have long been humans’ best friends—fearless protectors, loyal companions, fabulous Frisbee players. They are also famous for their amazing sense of smell. It’s hard to imagine the glorious world of smells dogs live in.
Fabel’s owner, archaeologist Sophie Vallulv, discovered he had such a good sniffer he could literally smell ancient bones and treasures buried deep underground from centuries ago.
Fabel found over 50 human bones, as well as treasures and gold coins that helped archaeologists put together the story of the island and fort of Sandy Borg in Sweden. There had been a bloody battle long ago in the late 5th century.
And what did Fabel ask for his troubles? The only reward he needed is his favorite green ball. Toss him his ball and he was happy, knowing he’s done a good job. Isn’t that just like a dog—and why we love them so?
Science, smell, dogs, dog human bond, history, archaeology—all woven into an incredible nonfiction picture book for ages 6-10.
